A) Installation - top

First of all, if you haven't worked with Wordpress ever before, I would recommend to learn a little about it and get to know it first, before heading to this documentation:

A. 1) First Steps

Before you can start playing around with your new theme, let's first check what the theme package includes. After you have downloaded the .zip file from Themeforest and unzipped it, its should reveal the following folders:

A. 2) Upload the Theme

You have two options how to upload themes in Wordpress and I will cover them both now. You can either upload all theme files via FTP or you can use Wordpress Theme Uploader. It really doesn't matter at all which one of these techniques you want to use, so choose the one which seems to make more sense to you.

Theme Uploader:

  1. So of course first you need to login into Wordpress backend.
  2. Find Appearance from left sidebar, open it and click Themes.
  3. Now you click link called Install Themes.
  4. In the next page, just under Install Themes link, there is an another link called Upload, click that.
  5. Now you just need to find the HEXAGRAM folder, which you just unzipped, and in there go to www folder and select hexagram.zip file.
  6. Then just click Install now and Wordpress will handle the rest!

FTP:

So I assume you do know how to use your FTP client of choice (like Filezilla), but if you don't, then try Theme Uploader technique.

  1. First login to your FTP account and navigate to your Wordpress installation directory and in there go to wp-content\themes folder.
  2. Now put FTP client to side for a while and head back to HEXAGRAM folder, which you just unzipped, and in there go to www folder.
  3. There should be only one folder, called hexagram.zip unzip it first. To make sure you are in the right place, check that folder contains files like index.php, functions.php and style.css.
  4. If everything looks good you are ready to upload this unzipped hexagram folder to wp-content\themes, which you found earlier.

A. 3) Active the Theme

After theme is successfully uploaded, head on to Appearance » Themes, in Wordpress backend. There should be now one new theme called HEXAGRAM. Find it and just click Activate.

A. 4) Upload Dummy Content (optional)

Be aware that downloading Dummy Content may take a while, depending on the speed of your internet connection!

If this is your first time with Wordpress platform or if you just want to get use to the theme, you may want to first just play around with it. And in that situation Dummy Content is excellent choice! With this single file you should get almost identically result like in demo site. But of course you can easily just skip this step, if you don't want any unnecessary extra content to your site.

Step 1: (Importing Theme Data)

  1. First go to Tools » Import and in there choose Wordpress.
  2. If you haven't imported anything before, you will need to install Importer plugin. So install it and once it's done you can activate it.
  3. Now click Browse and navigate to PixelDesign folder. In there go to _DummyData folder and select hexagram_dummy_data.xml file and click Upload file and import.
  4. Before submitting it, you may also want to check Download and import file attachments checkbox.
  5. And now you just need to wait. Importing can take a while, but it will save a whole lot of your time so just be patient.

Step 2: (Importing Options Data)

  1. First go to OptionTree » Settings » Import from left menu in wordpress dashboard.
  2. Now leave this screen opened and head to _DummyData folder and open the file hexagram_options_data.txt.
  3. Press CTRL + A and than CTRL + C to select all the contents and than copy them all once.
  4. Now head back to the dashboard and press the CTRL + P at once to paste the contents in the Theme Options box.
  5. Click on the Theme Options Button. And now you just need to wait. Importing can take a while, but it will save a whole lot of your time so just be patient.

A. 5) Setup Required Pages

Skip this step if you have imported the demo data as described above in A. 4

From the left menu click/hover your mouse on Pages » Add New. A new page will open where you have to add the name of the page as Home in title field and click on the Publish button. So our Home page is now created.

Now repeat the same steps and create another page with the name Blog. Simply add the title of the page as Blog and Publish it. Our required pages are now done.

Follow the next step.

A. 6) Reading Settings

From now on I assume that you have at least some content on your site. If not, you should create few pages before you can continue.

Now is also good time to set site Front page and Posts page in Settings » Reading Settings page.

For Front Page choose Home from the dropdown and for Posts Page choose Blog from dropdown. And save the settings.

B) Using the Theme - top

All settings of the theme are managed through Theme Options section located at Appearance → Theme Options.

From Theme Options you can change the layouts of blog page, select the color schemes, upload the logo and favicon etc etc.

Every tab represents a single section of Home Page. so you can easily understand that what section is for what.

This theme is fully dependent on Theme Options and all the settings of the theme are located in the Appearance » Theme Options

Here you can set all the settings contents and everything of the theme and site.

B. 5) Child Theme

Hexagram is child theme ready and a sample child theme is included in the download package..

Simply install the child theme as you install the Hexagram theme and than make all the customizations and changes into child theme's css.

So in this way you can update the main theme files without any loss of your customisations and changes.
